The ringed birds are juveniles from the nests situated on the roofs of Geo Milev School and Prosveta Community Centre in Belozem. 50 birds were ringed in total in compliance with the stork ringing license issued by MOEW. The aim of that activity is to start up a regular ringing and monitoring program for White storks in Bulgaria. To achieve that were ordered and purchased ELSA rings developed and introduced by Max Planck Institute for Ornithology – Germany. Typical for these is their octagonal shape, large durability of the material and large size allowing their easy reading. The rings are registered in EURING – he co-ordinating organisation for European bird-ringing schemes. The rings are black in colour with white inscription. The code for Bulgaria is vertical BGS and letter-digit code B0001-B0050 reading from bottom to top. The rings are put on the right leg of the storks!
We shall appreciate feedback information for observation of the storks! Such information can be sent directly to Bulgarian Ornithological Centre on email: ring.bgs@gmail.com, as well as at the web-based portal of EURING: http://www.ring.ac/
We would like to use the opportunity to thank the colleagues at Bulgarian Ornithological Centre at Institute of Zoology of BAS without whom this scheme would not have been realized!
The rings are purchased within the project “Conservation of White stork (Ciconia ciconia) in European Stork village Belozem” funded by NatuRegio program of Alfred Toеpfer Academy (Germany).
The ringing of White storks in Belozem was done with the financial support of Storch Schweiz, Ciconia, Euronatur and Vogelwarte Sempach.
