Environmentalists write to interim ministers not to agree with new construction plans for the Pirin National Park
“The procedure was initiated by the Municipality Bansko and the Ministry of Environment and Water in violation with Bulgarian and European environmental legislation and with your participation as a Co-ordinating Body you will be involved in illegal acts of these two institutions," the letter said.
The environmentalists point out that the procedure aims to legalize the offense committed by the concessionaire and by the eco-ministry between 2001 and 2011 that led to the use of the area, which is 60% higher than allowed by the concession.
The new changes will also allow the construction of a new ski lifts and slopes in National Park Pirin over 14 times larger area than permitted by Bansko ski zone concession. These actions are against the public interest and the Protected Areas Act.
Coalition "For the nature" reminds that the ongoing reforms in the Management Plan for the National Park Pirin have not been appraised in a procedure, where the need for environmental assessment and compatibility with Natura 2000 is evaluated.
Furthermore, the construction of new lifts and slopes across the National Park Pirin is allowed, despite outright bans in art. 21, section 1 of the Protected Areas Act.
Until now over 40,000 signatures are collected ( both online and on paper) in petition to protect the National Park Pirin from further construction and clearcutting of old-growth forests.
