In the wild, a bear live up to 18-20 years. In cases where the predator is grown in captivity and under appropriate conditions, it can survive up to 30 years.
A bear eats about 5-6 tons per year at a variety of food (fruit, corn and other cereals, fish, meat). For the next two years the funds for the animals food in the Center in Vlahi are partly provided by ALERTIS - Fund bears and nature conservation, as well as by donations from visitors, activists and lovers of wildlife. After this period, we will rely mainly on donations from sympathizers and supporters.
The Ministry of Environment and Water Affairs is working on a initiative all wild animals living in inadequate conditions in captivity, to be placed in a near-natural environment. This includes bears raised in State game reserve Kormisosh. Balkani Wildlife Society and the Dutch foundation ALERTIS are cooperating to find a new home for the four-footed.
In the past, in reserve Kormisosh were raised and bred bears for hunting purposes, some of which are imported from Romania. Breeding of bears requires resources and conditions that are more and more difficult to be provided in Kormisosh. In 2013 three of the bears were moved to the Netherlands under better conditions. Today in the vivarium live 10 bears, as another 4 animals are about to be moved in Belgium and the Netherlands. Experts from the Balkani will continue to help in the relocation of bears.
