The initiative draws public attention to the increasing use of disposable packaging in everyday life. The young people want to raise the environmental awareness of their peers and change their attitude towards the use of disposable products and waste generation.
Young Friends of the Earth are inviting young people under 30 to participate in the “Earth is not disposable” contest for artworks made from used disposable products. To participate in the contest you have to fill in the registration form by 16 January 2015.
A creative space will be provided in the period 17-24 January at the Laboratory for urban design owned by Transformers Association.
Photo of the winner artwork will be used for the designing of promotional T-shirts, which will be sold in support of Cleaning 2015 – an annual campaign organized by Za Zemiata. The campaign focuses on cleaning in mountain areas that are difficult to access. Participants can expect many interesting prizes such as books on environmental subjects, mugs and reusable bags.
The artworks will be exhibited in the Laboratory for urban design on 25 January. During the exhibition visitors will be able to vote for the best three in the categories Sculpture, Jewelry, and Home Appliances. Participants and visitors of the exhibition will receive useful tips on how to reduce waste generation, will learn more about the “Zero Waste” strategy and will enjoy the acoustic music program.
The voting will continue online on Facebook from 26 January until 6 February. The winners in the three categories will be determined based on the results from the online voting and the number of votes during the exhibition.

Young Friends of the Earth want to show that single use products and packaging may not end up in a landfill. Packaging can also be used to create beautiful objects. Unfortunately, recycling is not a solution – plastic bags are usually used for the production of new bags, which are not suitable for the food industry. At the same time, the recycling costs exceed the value of the plastic bags and most recycling centers do not take them. They are simply thrown away with the rest of the garbage. The best thing to do is to start reducing their use and replacing them with long-life packaging and reusable products.
