“Sakar – land of treasures” exhibition
The event took place on 15 January in the exhibition hall of the Municipal Historical Museum – Svilengrad and attracted a lot of attention. Most curious about the exhibition were the students from Dr Petar Beron Secondary School, while representatives of the local media provided a detailed coverage of the event.

Particularly interesting are the real-size model of the Lesser kestrel and the models of bird eggs, which are identical copies of eggs laid by rare birds. The Lesser kestrel is one of the newly discovered treasures of Sakar. The rare bird, which has disappeared from the region over the past decades, can be seen again in Sakar Protected Area, part of Natura 2000 environmental network. The return of the bird species has become possible thanks to Green Balkans and their “Restoration of the Lesser Kestrel” project LIFE11 NAT / BG / 360, financed by The LIFE Programme of the EU.

A lot of attention attract the information boards about the Cultural and historical treasures of Sakar – rock churches, dolmens, ruins of ancient fortresses and many other historical monuments.
The photos of buried tanks and defense equipment, border fences and barriers surrounded by rich biodiversity reminds guests that the area is part of the European Green Belt Initiative.

“Sakar – land of treasures” exhibition is organized by the Municipal History Museum – Svilengrad and Green Balkans within the project “Restoration of the Lesser Kestrel” LIFE11 NAT / BG / 360, financed by The LIFE Programme of the EU. The exhibition is jointly created by The British-Bulgarian Friendship Society and “Matochina” Association.
