The ninth edition of the Earth Hour starts around the world at 8.30 local time on Saturday, 28th March, only several months before the expected new global climate agreement. When the Earth Hour comes, it will unite the world community of six continents in local, real actions for the climate.
Even before the Earth Hour the organizers will work with the citizens, politicians and business for progress in the struggle with the climate changes in more than 120 countries, inclusive for notification of the government in Nepal for the policy for facilitation of the access to solar energy for city dwelling usage, raising of awareness for the climate at schools in Europe and Africa, as well as work with the farmers and fishermen of Australia and Columbia.
“Climate change is not only accent of the Hour, it is the challenge of our generation”, comments Sud Saronvala, manager of the WWF world campaign. “The Earth Hour is the most stable civil movement focused on climate. The lights can switch off for an hour, but the actions of millions during the whole year will inspire the decisions necessary for managing with the climate change.”
In 2014 only, the Earth Hour supported the fund-raising for planting of millions of trees, promoted the usage of energy-efficient stoves and reduced the carbon foot-print of thousands of schools.
“Climate change does not recognize boundaries, but human communities also unite over boundaries, policies, governments. The WWF climate movement is due to the number of people, has a large scope and ambitious, urgent goals”, adds Saronvala.
“We experienced and continue to know from bitter experience the hard consequences from the climate changes”, adds Georgi Stefanov, “Policy and climate changes” expert at WWF-Bulgaria. “The torrential rains and floods caused enormous damages and showed us clearly that we belittle the scientific facts and that we do not spend resource and pay attention to the quality river management. For this reason in 2015 in Bulgaria we will dedicate the Earth Hour to the rivers – obstructed, turned into canals, with cut down riverside vegetation, void of life, they cannot fulfil safely their natural functions”.
Since 2007 the Earth Hour has mobilized companies, organizations, governments and hundreds of millions people in over 7000 places and 162 countries in actions for sustainable future.
