“Coal dinosaurs on life-support systems” – the third report by “Greenpeace”-Bulgaria on the topic of coals reviews the direct and indirect support which the state grants to the coal-mining sector – from the mining and processing of coals to their burning in the heat power stations.
The state gives a series of legislative, administrative and economic concessions and subsidies to the coal-mining sector, which pollutes and inflicts damages on people’s health;
The state loses over 300 million levs annually. This happens by removing excise duty on home coal consumption, concluding of long-term binding contracts for purchase of electric energy from coals, granting of free carbon quotas to the coal stations, facilitating expropriation of land for coal mining and rescheduling payments of the coal mining enterprises to the social security system;
“The coal dinosaurs” receive the life-support systems they need. This allows their existence at time when real, accessible and health- and environment-friendly alternatives exist.
