The exceptionally rare lesser kestrels nest on the territory of the oil refinery in Burgas
The rare lesser kestrels use for nesting technological facilities in the region of Lukoil Neftochim Burgas AD, having occupied old nests built by jackdaws (Corvus monedula), whose number is over 30-40 couples. On the same territory some 50 couples of hobbies nest as well. Likewise look the mixed colonies of lesser kestrels, jackdaws and hobbies in the neighboring countries Greece and Turkey, where lesser kestrels nest in towns and villages and are often an endangered species as well.

It was though till recently that the rare lesser kestrels have disappeared from Bulgaria as a nesting species, but after Green Balkans project “Lesser kestrel Recovery” started, funded by EU’s LIFE program, in the region of Sakar village Levka, in 2013, were observed the first couples of nesting lesser kestrels. A year after that, in 2014, Green Balkans team members localized a nesting place of lesser kestrels also on the territory of Lukoil.
The team of Green Balkans avails itself of the opportunity to thank the management and the staff of Lukoil Neftohim Burgas AD for the cooperation in the preparation and conducting of the field research on the territory of Burgas oil refinery.
