In 2016 climate change is a fact; the actual question is how to deal with it. On March 19th emblematic buildings and cultural sites such as the Arc de Triomphe, the Empire State Building and the Opera in Sydney will switch off their lights for an hour. The WWF kindly invite their supporters to use this event as a means to incite for actions and deliver messages for dealing with climate change from their personal profiles in the social media – the most powerful channels of communication today.
In 10 years Earth Hour has become the greatest nature celebration in the world. In 2015 more than 170 countries and 7 000 cities took part in the initiative; besides switching lights off people use this opportunity to take active measures for the preservation of local natural resources: rivers, forests, marine territories, traditional farming, endangered species, support for energy efficient projects.
In March WWF – Bulgaria will also celebrate their tenth birthday. In March, and throughout the year, the team of WWF will take the opportunity to present what they have achieved on the national level for the protection of old-growth forests in Bulgaria; for the introduction of a nation-wide standards for sustainable forest management; for the protection and development of protected areas; for the inclusion of farmers, forest owners and entrepreneurs in nature conservation initiatives; for marine conservation and raising the awareness on sea food; for river and wetland protection; and for the conservation of one of the symbols of the Danube River: the European Sturgeon.
