The slogan of the 2016 NATURA 2000 Award is “Treasure to wait to be discovered” and the campaign has been announced on the official website of the European Commission.
The NATURA 2000 Award has been initiated by the European Commission and is bestowed to the most successful projects that have contributed for preservation and management of different territories of the Pan-European environmental network NATURA 2000 -http://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/natura2000/awards/index_en.htm. The NATURA 2000 prize distinguishes the best achievements in the sphere of management and popularization of the network and its sites, as well as the best activities for raising awareness for NATURA 2000 and its benefits for the European citizens. The applicants from different EU countries compete in five different categories – Communication, Environment protection, Trans-border cooperation, Convergence of interests and Social and economic benefits.
The project of “Green Balkans – Stara Zagora” “The Lesser Kestrel Recovery” competes in the category “Trans-border cooperation” and presents the partnership with the Spanish organization DEMA aimed at recovery of nesting of the lesser kestrel at the territory of 33 “Sakar”, part of NATURA 2000. As a result of the mutual efforts the rare kestrels nest in Sakar again after the species was considered to have been extinct for the country some decades ago.
