The Concessions Act was passed during the last days of the previous Parliament with minimum majority and provoked enormous public discontent. Multitude of citizen and political structures declared themselves against it by sending their standpoints with the request for immediate veto by the president. The coalition “For the Nature” also sent its standpoint as early as the 26th of January. Look at our motives at: http://forthenature.org/attitudes/69
A citizen protest demanding veto took place on Monday (the 30th of January) in Sofia with the slogan “Pirin is given away as a present, they are overbuilding Irakly – first test for Radev”, supported also by Coalition “For the Nature”.
In response to the sharp public reaction, on the 2nd of February the president Rumen Radev declared in a statement to the media that he would put a veto on the outrageous Act. Among the motives which he emphasized were that the Act “introduces broad boundaries of subjectivism, opportunities for corruption practices and making decisions harming the public interest.” According to procedure, the law ought to be re-examined by the next National Assembly.
In the meantime the environmentalists sent a request to the official government for acceptance of the orders for the sites of the European ecological network Natura 2000 along the Black Sea coast, which will be a step towards preservation of the last not built-up beaches.
Coalition “For the Nature” insists also the project plans for management of the national parks Pirin and Rila and natural park Vitosha to be returned for revision, in order to stop their building-up and cutting down of their centuries-old forests. An international campaign, started by WWF in support of national park Pirin, continues and has collected more than 50 000 signatures up to this moment.
