About the campaign

The campaign is part of a broader effort to focus international attention on the increasing number of illegal activities that are affecting Bulgaria’s protected areas and the authorities’ lack of reaction, involvement and financial support necessary for the management of these areas. In particular, its goal is to support the complete submission of the proposed Natura 2000 areas.
Areas under threat include Pirin National Park, Rila National Park with the famous Seven Lakes, Rodopi mountain, Strandza, Kamchija river, Irakli beach, Kaliakra cape, and many, many more.

The main tool of the campaign is the online petition, accessible on WWF"s Bulgarian website (http://www.panda.org/bulgaria).
In addition, on the campus of Jacobs University Bremen on March 17 there will be an event in support of Natura 2000, as a part of a German-wide initiative. The campaign emphasises Bulgaria"s outstanding natural capital, the main threats to it and calls on the authorities to take action before it is too late.

Similar events will take place in Karlsruhe, Nurnberg, Munich, and other cities. People will be able to write their own greeting card to the Bulgarian authorities, the European Commissioner for Environment, the German Bundestag, and express their stand on this important environmental issue.
