Such a struggle it was for BSP (Bulgarian Socialists Party) to gain control over the woodlands from the MRF (Movement for Rights and Freedom) – it took them more than a year. And until that became a fact in July 2007, there was a downpour of promises for reforms in that sector. Since then the newly created State Agency for Forests (SAF), which is under the supervision of the prime minister Sergei Stanishev, hasn’t achieved anything substantial. The head of the agency though , Stefan Iurukov has succeeded in breaking the record in the discipline “exchanges” – in less than 10 days he managed to give away 3.3 thousand decares of forest land around the coastal area and the winter resorts. The transactions were done in the end of April and the beginning of May. This week “24 hours” revealed some of the favoured businessmen. There are no random names – amongst them are the advertising boss Krasismir Gergov, Hristo Kovachki – a citizen of Samokov and the attorney-at-law Todor Batkov. The businessmen themselves admitted about the deal for the newspaper and revealed their investment plans. Gergov is making a golf course on 200 decares of forests in Balchik, Kovachki is building ski slopes and resorts on close to 1300 decares of woodlands in Rila Mountain, and Batkov is planning a neighbourhood for 20 thousand people in the Burgas Bay on state land, estimated at about 5.8 mln leva.
