In the last days of August we, the team of Transparent Mountains, invite you to a summer camping trip. The purpose of the trip is to gather the most active supporters of the initiative together at a beautiful place in the Rhodope Mountains. We want to get to know each other and share our visions about the mountain resources and how we take part into its management. We are about to take advantage of our presence at "Chatuma" as to apply and discuss different ways of stable usage of the natural resources.

Let Nature Remain in Bulgaria non-governmental organizations and civic groups coalition warns, that at the last sitting of the government in resignation a practically illegal decision for enlarging the concession area of Bansko ski zone in Pirin National Park has been taken.

No official documents have yet appeared, but the deputy premier in economic development in resignation Daniela Bobeva has explained for the media that the concession fee is up 50%. There being no other information, it can be supposed that the State has joined in the concession of 650 decares of ski runs, lifts and facilities of state ownership, which have so far been used illegally by the concessionaire Yulen AD, although they have not been included in Bansko ski zone concession of 990 decares

Let Nature Remain in Bulgaria Coalition of non-governmental organizations and civic groups has received the results from the inspection of Blagoevgrad Regional Prosecutor’s Office from July 7, 2014 on violations of law during construction of Bansko ski zone in Pirin National Park. The inspection was conducted on the request of Supreme Administrative Prosecutor’s Office.

This year is VIIth international census, which is conducted June 15 to July 15 in two successive years – 2014 and 2015.

“Tree of the year” contest marks its fifth edition with two new categories for participants nationwide

This year the contest for favorite, unforgettable trees marks its first jubilee. For the fifth year in a row the EcoObshtnost Foundation has announced its call for nominations of cherished trees, memorable for specific experiences. In harmony with the jubilee there are five categories: Tree of the year, Young nature enthusiast, Tree of the future, Ancient trees speak and Our family tree.

As in the past, those partial to natural beauty and its presence in our lives are invited to send photos and stories about trees from around the country, in order to reach more people with their memory, event, or tale.

What is new this year, in addition to support for the contest from new sources, are two of the categories and an invitation to share Bulgarian poetry, inspired by and dedicated to our natural treasures.
Organizations from the nature conservation, cultural heritage and tourist sectors to work together for the Black Sea coast and mountains
The Coalition of NGOs and civic groups “Let Nature Remain in Bulgaria” and organizations from the tourism and cultural heritage preservation sectors will sign a memorandum defining nature conservation and the preservation of cultural heritage as priorities for the development of tourism in Bulgaria.

All the details are to be announced at the press conference on July 17t, 2014, at noon at BTA Pressclub.

This is also poaching – taking a tortoise from the natural environment and letting it go in Sofia, where it will die in the coming winter.
This tortoise was found in Sofia and taken to Balkani Wildlife Society. Here is their response: “We are very grateful to the people who rescued and handed it over, now we will take care of it in the Testudo Breeding Centre near Dragoman, until we return it to the appropriate habitat.”

The ban of GM maize MON810 remains in force

With a Council of Ministers decision dated of 25th June 2014 the ban for growing genetically modified maize MON810 on the territory of Bulgaria remains in force. The ban was adopted with a Council of Ministers decision 56 dated of 3rd February 2011. In the end of 2013 the EC appealed to Bulgaria to overturn the ban for growing GMO maize for the motive that the ban is incorrectly legally based. In the beginning of 2014 the EC informed Bulgaria that starting a procedure for violation under art.258 of the Treaty for Functioning of the EU is forthcoming. With the new Council of Ministers decision dated of 2014 the legal basis has been changed, but the ban from 2011 remains in force, announced the Minister of agriculture and foods prof. Dimiter Grekov.

Let Nature Remain in Bulgaria coalition of NGOs and civic groups expresses its support for National Assembly’s decision for the establishment of a new national park, named Bulgarian Black Sea Park. This decision corresponds to Bulgaria’s, and Romania’s, obligations within EU’s framework for protection of the natural heritage of the Black Sea biogeographical region.
However, environmentalists believe that Ministry of Environment and Waters (MEW) has not done a good job on this park proposal.
