On 19th May in the BNR the consecutive debate between citizens and politicians took part under the project “Speaking (into the) open” initiated by Association for research practices (http://www.zelenizakoni.com/za-proekta). Against the backdrop of continual civic protests and short-term decisions taken under the pressure of the European Union the Bulgarian politicians search ways for work for the sustainable conservation of the country’s biodiversity. Let us citizens and party representatives discuss together what we want and how it is possible for it to turn into long-term national policies.

Open letter to the National Assembly for protection of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast

To the Members of Parliament of the 42nd National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria

Open letter

From the civic organisations united in the Coalition "Let Nature Remain In Bulgaria" and the Bulgarian Tourist Chamber

Dear Ms./Mr. Member of Parliament,

The whole Bulgarian public relies upon Your vote and Your conscience today – to put an end to the chaos detrimental for the future of our children. The future of tourism depends also on the beauty of the Black Sea Coast. You are kindly requested with the utmost seriousness to treat our proposal for putting a stop to the mass building-up of the few nature spots left of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, put forward by the independent MP Svetlin Tanchev. Without the law amendment which we propose after another 5-10 years we will awake with a coast fully covered with concrete and we will be ashamed to look in the eyes our own children and grandchildren. Today their future is being decided and it is in Your hand. For this reason it is crucially important to vote “in favour” of the proposal. This proposal is a professional one drawn up by architects and specialists in construction control. It is aimed at ceasing the avalanche of concrete complexes in the few nature nooks along the sea coast having preserved their natural beauty – 20 protected NATURA 2000 areas. If these places are not preserved, the Black Sea Coast tourism will remain forever a second-quality product. Please, pay attention that the restrictions apply ONLY to habitats within 2 km off the shore and DO NOT stop the development of a public infrastructure like roads and waste water treatment plants.

The coalition of non-governmental organizations and citizen groups “Let Nature Remain” express great worry about the mass dismissal of experts from the Operational Programme Environment (OPE) of the Ministry of Environment and Waters.
Throughout the last few days, 40 experts from OPE were made redundant. This action was motivated with the restructuring of the sections. But the new sections have just 10 positions less than the previous ones. Why then more than 40 people were made redundant and from where would the missing 30 come?
