Trees from 14 countries took part in the race European Tree of the Year 2015

The gaining popularity international contest for most loved trees is about to start. The competition this year is higher than in the previous editions of the contest, with the participation of representatives from 14 countries – England, Belgium, Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Poland, Slovakia, Wales, Hungary, France, Czech Republic and Scotland. Curious stories and pictures of the trees finalists are already available on the contest web page, which from this year has a new design.

2nd February is the official celebration of the water sites of the planet Earth. The term “wetland” means a piece of land which is wet or could be turned wet, but also could be drained. These are all lakes, swamps, rivers, marshlands, mangrove woods, peat-bogs, fish ponds, paddy fields and even the tidal areas at the sea coast up to 6 m. depth.

BULGARIAN ENVIRONMENTALISTS PRESENTED GOOD PRACTICE AWARD BY RENEWABLE GRID INITIATIVE ASSOCIATION IN BRUSSELS
Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds (BSPB) and the partner organization BirdLife International, which unites some 110 environmental organisations worldwide was presented Good Practice Award by Renewables-Grid-Initiative (RGI) in the “environmental protection” category. The award was presented yesterday at the annual RGI conference in Brussels. The high honor bestowed upon the Bulgarian and the international environmental organisations is for their successful joint work in preventing endangered birds from electric shocks on distribution power lines in Bulgaria and Sudan by installing special plastic insulators on dangerous poles.

The two bearded vultures in the wildlife rescue center are the only representatives of their species in Bulgaria. These majestic birds have disappeared from our country around the sixties last century, mainly on account of illegal hunting and poisoning.
But here we are, in 2015, after eight long years of waiting, seeing the result – a breeding couple has formed, which we hope some day will raise their brood!

Preliminary results of 39th Mid-Winter Waterbird Census

This year's Mid-Winter Census took place in frost and fog, in the period 16 -18.01.2015.

“Green Balkans” teams reported the following major reservoirs included in the National Biodiversity Monitoring System (NBMS): Shabla, Durankulak, Pomorie Lake, Ovcharitsa dam, Koprinka dam, Zhrebchevo dam, Piasachnik dam, Malko Sharkovo dam, Tundzha and Maritsa rivers, as well as dozens of small ponds. The fog did not allow monitoring of Rozov Kladenets dam, although there were birds.
Over 3.5bn euro costs for EU countries due to mechanisms similar to those discussed within the trade agreement between EU and US

A new report published today by “Za Zemiata” (For the Earth) shows that European governments have already paid at least 3.5bn euros to private investors as a result of a mechanism for settling disputes between investors and the state (ISDS), which has been included in international commercial transactions.

Griffon vulture Rescue Center inclubates again. The camera placed in the aviary, allow us to see exactly when the egg is laid - shortly after 17:00 on 01.19.2015. The couple was very caring and we manage to catch a glimpse the egg just until they changed or the female stood up to stretch her legs for a sort time.
BSPB present the SmartBirs and SmartBirds Pro mobile application to researchers, media and institutions
Free of charge Application for Smartphones and Tablets “Smartbirds” which has been nominated by World Summit Award Mobile for the best application worldwide at the category Environment for 2014 and it was defined/ labelled by the technological magazine HiComm as one of the best interesting mobile applications in our country, was presented with the updated version by its authors from the Bulgarian Society for protection of birds.

The Bulgarian Society for protection of birds presented the two mobile applications SmartBirds and Smartbirds Pro before/ in front of scientists, representatives of institutions, other NGOs and media.
20 years of Nature Park Strandja
On 24 of January 2005 Nature Park “Strandja” is declared as – the biggest protected territory in the country. The territory is placed at a geographical crossroad which has preserved species from different epochs, continents and seas. We from Bulgarian Biodiversity Foundation have significant contribution for the research, protection and popularization of the park during these 20 years.
Another golf course by Balchik will ruin the last Black Sea steppes with endangered bird species

The coalition of civil groups and non-governmental organizations For the Nature opposes the plans for a new golf course on nearly 1500 decares by the town of Balchik in the same-name zone, part of Natura 2000, European ecological network.

Local citizens have straightaway formed a civil group to oppose yet another megalomaniac project on the Black Sea coast, and have opened a protest petition.

Standpoints have already been sent to the institutions explaining why the projects should not be realized (links to the texts can be found below).
European Parliament voted new powers for the governments to impose bans on GM crops
The European Parliament voted on rules that give the national governments new powers to prohibit the cultivation of genetically modified (GM) crops on their territory. Today's decision by the European Parliament for the first time allows governments to ban entire categories of GM crops. „Za Zemyata” appeals on member states of the EU to immediately use this new opportunity and to prohibit the cultivation of GM maize - the only GM crop category, which is currently in the process of authorization for cultivation in Europe.
39nth annaul counting of  wintering waterfoul in Bulgaria
The Bulgarian Society for Protection of Birds has organized counting of the hibernated waterbirds in our country. In the period of from 16 to 18 January . More than 100 volunteers and members of the BSPB and participating partners united their forces in more than 40 teams. They will visit all big water basins in the country. In the same period the birds in almost every European country and countries form Africa will be counted as well. The counting in Bulgaria is held for the 39 consecutive year and will cover more than 200 wet zones, including the Danube and Black sea shores and all big dams and rivers inside the country where the waterbirds hibernate. The participants will report on the number, species and spreading of the birds. The results will give an answer to the question “More or less are the birds in our country during this winter and what the main threats to them are? “
